Hi Kathy, My daughter Sarah is a really excessive air swallower. She is currently waiting for a peg placement for venting. We have just starting using Motilium(Domperidone), in the past her baruim swallows and doctors listening to her stomach have all said it's fast and vey noisey!....I'm wondering if you have knowlegde on anyone else using this med with the air issues??? I'm thinking that speeding up an already fast digstive tract may cause more discomfort? Or could it expell gas out more frequently? I'd love any feedback.
From Dr. Kathleen Motil, gastroenterologist at the Rett Center, Baylor College of Medicine:
Domperidone is a drug that is similar to metoclopramide, but has fewer neurological side effects because it cannot enter the brain. Domperidone helps the motility of the stomach. Domperidone has not been approved for use in the United States because of reports of cardiac arrest and arrythmias; therefore, we cannot prescribe it for general use. We have minimal experience with the use of Domperidone. I cannot comment on Sarah’s noisy and “fast” stomach. In principle, domperidone should have little effect on intestinal gas.
Thank you Kathy, I stopped the Domperidone immediately. It did cause her to burp more then usual, which was a good thing. However the heart risks alarmed me to say the least. Back to square one, wait for the peg to be placed and see if venting will help her, take care, Lisa & Sarah, NZ.
